Update – Blogs Using Blix Krieg
March 1st, 2007
I’m always amazed at the creativity of people using WordPress, and not the least those using my theme, Blix Krieg.
We’ve had 2500+ downloads of the theme so far in the last month, and over 4000 web-pages have linked back to us in that time, so we’re getting a decent following!
Everytime someone installs the theme, I get a ping back to my control panel.
Whilst I can’t look at every one, if I have time I usually drop by a few sites a week just to have a look.
Here’s an update of a few of them I loved:-
WordPress Blix Blogs (Updated 1/3/2007)
EchoSix Blog – A pacifist member of the US millitary blogs about his thoughts about war and the big humanitarian issues like landmines and cluster bombs – very interesting read.
Softonaut Software Engineering Blog – Three Austrian Guys that like to talk about Java and various other linux development ideas.
Online Reputation Blog – A*newsish* blog giving great strategies and advice about how to improve your reputation as an online publisher – most recently blogged about the mybloglog debacle.
ListeningPosts – they don’t use my theme, but the do use my Yahoo Sidebar Widget (a widget for showing you a relatively accurate count of the number of other sites that link to you), and I thought their music related blog was pretty groovy and well set-up.
Suriyapat Design – A web design and aesthetics blog (as far as I can tell – I think it’s written in Thai) – I love what they’ve done with the header 🙂
www.frectis.net – Blog by a midwife (Frectis, you’re blog isn’t showing well in internet explorer – something is too wide in your main text – probably the 468 wide ad bar half way down – you can widen the main container in your layout.css file, or just make that ad smaller (even change the google_ad_width parameter in the script itself)).
www.susiej.com – Blog by SusieJ, an ex journalist now fighting the good fight in her new career as a BUSY mum 🙂
www.bagofnothing.com – Incisive and witty commentary from a Texan about – well, nothing in particular!
http://jeffbattersby.com/ – A blog by Jeff Battersby (Jeff, you need to update the theme to our latest version – it’ll fix your sidebar issues.)
http://www.yourstudioa.com/ – one of my favourites – a blog about and for Paramedics – very snazzy mods made to the theme by Zack Guidry (Zack, please get in touch – your changes look fantastic and I’d love to know more.)
http://sobesto.pl/stronakasi – Blog by a young polish lady called Kasi – I wish I knew polish as then I’d be able to understand what it was about, but www.poltran.com gives:-
It looks on it, that I have become mature woman with (from) very riotous teenagers greatly, which (who) illimitably loves little one and everything it is devote him (it; it) in state (condition), as well as consciousness of property of somebody likes at who from my thirst this transformation become – my reality. I discover unknown boards of patience in , disinterested love, tranquility (peace) and world becomes due to that all better I develop culinary talent – ) even, with (from) different repercussions it. But at least aspirations not mum < beguile > < have > anorektycznych, hehe but savor is sharpened illimitably … … Hm but as yet, it has has proceeded so many (so much) < rear > write about because here przeszÅ‚osci? Melanż, Intoxication, love of false thirsts, hearts zlodowacenie, it has has proceeded to oblivion already. And if only never it has woken up … wiecej
!? From which I assume this blog is about a young lady (perhaps a new mother? ah shucks – all the good ones get snapped up 🙂 ) making her way from a riotous adolescence to woman-hood, and learning along the way about unconditional love for her children, peace in her heart, the joy of ‘feeling fulfilled’, and even how to cook!
Another foreign language blog –
http://blog.endunham.com/ – A japanese blog – with pictures on the front that just reminded me I’m hungry (Endunhan has obviously well perfected the art of ‘culinary talent’ which Kasi laments).. obligatory google translation of endunham’s ‘about me’ page follows:-
Family: [danna] and [wanko] 2 (pit bull & mixed breed of [raburadoruretoriba] mixed breed of 1 and shepherd dog & golden retriever 1)
Age: Around the year when the bending of the skin has become terrible…With just the word [tsu] it solves.
Favorite thing thing: What the [se] cross over making densely (analog and digital)
Hateful thing thing: Becoming the blue (anyone so don’t you think? the ~)
Those which is interest: The miscellaneous goods gathering, DIY (the small article and the furniture and the recycling miscellaneous goods which are made with the cheap material, the [rimeiku] varieties), the antique shop round and the photograph (in especially [horuga] zeal).
Slogan of life: Life-long study! There is no end in the world of learning.
I agree with you enduhan, life long study is the best way to avoid the ‘becoming the blue’ 🙂 And I think that “What the [se] cross over making densely (analog and digital)” means Endunhan likes photography..
This is just a small random selection, and I’ll add more over time – if you want to let me know about your blog, please drop me a comment below.
As always, you can see my raw test page of the latest stable Blix Krieg release here. If you want all the latest updates, I’d suggest you bookmark the BlixKrieg Theme Category. You can always download the latest stable release from my blixkrieg theme page.
This blog isn’t just about Blix Krieg though – I’m also active on the Google Webmaster’s Help forum (my tag there is dockarl) and I write pretty regularly here about things I learn on the forum – so you might like to subscribe to our rss feed to keep up with the latest news and views to help you keep your blog where you want it – at the top of the google index.
If you’d like to help support utheguru.com, please feel free to download the Firefox browser (below). Not only is it a better browser (in my honest opinion) but as a referrer to Google, this is a source of income for the blog also!

Hi Duck. Is there a way I can turn off just one ad? The “indent” — or can you only turn off the entire set?
Thanks
2. DuckMan | February 22nd, 2007 at 3:11 am
sure you can – if you download the latest version, I’ve added a third parameter in each of the config lines which allow you to turn individual ads off…
I know you’ve made quite a few changes to your theme, so a quick and dirty way would be to edit first-ad.php and change the line:-
< ? InsertAdvert($FrontIndentFormat);?>
to
< ? //InsertAdvert($FrontIndentFormat);?>
The two forward slashes just disable the php command that follows, which happens to be the function that displays the ad.

or you could achieve the same thing by downloading the new version, and replacing only the adsense.php and functions.php files.. think that should do the trick.
Then you’d follow the instructions in the latter half of the adsense.php file and put 1’s in the third position for each ad you wanted to turn off..

Done. Nice update to this theme. (I downloaded the new theme, and replaced adsense and functions) I have put the “1” in the index, but the third position, for the indent:
$FrontIndentFormat = array(2,1,1,1);
but, ad is still showing up.

hmm.. that’s got me stumped.. I just tried it on this copy and works fine.
Are you sure you replaced functions.php and not bx_functions.php? They are different.

TheDuck

Yes. That was exactly it! Thanks, Susie

Thanks for introducing my blog!!
I’ve been actually tackling with my language code issue since I upgraded wp to 2.1. So, you might notice that I switch your theme back and forth with default one.

does not work on 2.1.1 for me.
9. Jeff Battersby | February 23rd, 2007 at 8:11 am
Hey, thanks for the shout out. Just upgraded to the latest version of Blix, so my sidebar issues should be resolved now.
I’ve got a question for you too. I’d like to create a Page that is based on the archive template but that lists complete posts for a specific category. Any easy way to do this? Or at least a clue as to how I should screw around with the template to make it work?
Also, is there a way to change the kerning on the header? Right now my Blog name runs over the top of my slug line.
Thanks! -Jeff

Hiya Jon!
Can you please give me a few pointers about what parts don’t work so that I can look into it?
Thanks for your feedback!

Hey thanks for all your hard work on this theme. I fixed the container because fixing the ads gives me a bigger headache 😉 I hate IE so I never looked at it.
12. frectis | February 23rd, 2007 at 2:07 pm
And … thanks for the links to other Blixes… sheesh, never occurred to me to change anything about the colors. Now I’ll never sleep! 😛
13. DuckMan | February 23rd, 2007 at 2:29 pm
No worries Frectis!
Yep I’ve tested your changes from my end, and you look to have been successful in fixing the prob…. just for the info of other people here, would you mind explaining briefly what you changed to fix the problem?
I know alot of people that use Blix Krieg are beginners, so it’s helpful to have an idea about little changes more advanced users make to the functionality of their blogs so I can add it to a future FAQ..

TheDuck

Thank you for including a link to our site (Your Studio-A) in your ‘Favorite Blix Kreig’ installs list! For the first few years of my career people would call me a graphics artist, to which my response was ‘I AM NOT A GRAPHICS ARTIST!’
After doing this for 10 years I have realized that the graphics are, of course, a huge part of what we do. Thank you for the compliment.
I really just changed some of the colors in the CSS styles and installed some WP plugins. You guys doing the development of the WP system and themes are doing the hard work! Thanks for creating a platform that is SO EASY to customize.

Hello The Duck.
Many thanks for releasing this modified theme. I find it incredibly useful. However I wondered if you could tell me how to implement widgets in the sidebar.
Widgets seem to work fine in my old version of Blix but not in Blitzkrieg. Why is that?
Best wishes,
Noddy
16. DuckMan | February 26th, 2007 at 7:19 am
Hi Noddy – as I Understand it, the stock standard version of Blix isn’t widget ready, although there is a version that has widgets enabled – I haven’t yet incorporated that code in the theme because it is relatively buggy and doesn’t work with all widgets.
I am a widget lover, so I definitely have a widget ready version on the agenda for my next major release.
Cheers,
TheDuck

Hey Duck.
I just wanted to let you know what a great job you’ve done with the Blix theme. When I first stumbled on the orignal I was blown away. And set out to create my own version of it – later I discovered SEO Dave’s Blix which contributed a great deal to my own version as it did yours. I wish I had found blixkrieg earlier because you have done some exceptional work and would have saved me hours of coding. Oh, you’re adsense template is top notch, A+ PhP.
It is hard to give credit to one person as my theme is the result of many fine minds… but I just want to let you know that you’ve definitely outdone yourself with the BlixKrieg Theme.

Thanks Jonathan – I appreciate your kind words.

Only a pleasure…
It’s minds like yours that have stretched my own ability, which wasn’t much to begin with. So, I thank you.
