The government (or a steering group thereof) has decided that Britain needs to play catchup with the rest of europe (some of which enjoys 100mb connection speeds)... So what are they doing? - Trying to get the whole of the UK supplied with a 2mb bband connection be 2012! - Although many ISPs are saying this is pretty tough to do, and some of the mobile broadband providers are now arguing about how to achieve this!
